'It is not just saying' - Awoniyi urges teammates to show they are truly the Super Eagles in Afconq

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is confident that the Super Eagles can bring an end to their poor run of form ahead of the imminent 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The three-time African champions have won just one of their last five games, dating back to the defeat to Ivory Coast in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in February.
They defeated Ghana in an international friendly in March and lost to Mali in another friendly game during that period before losing to Benin and playing a 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in June.
Awoniyi wasn't in action during the said period as his last appearance was in the World Cup qualification game against Lesotho last November, no thanks to his recurring injuries.
He missed the AFCON earlier this year and missed all games that have been played since then but he is now fit and was included in the squad for the forthcoming games.
Speaking to AdemolaVictorTv, the former Liverpool striker expressed confidence that the Super Eagles can put their recent poor form aside and come out victorious against Benin and Rwanda
“Yeah, I think for us, football is our job, this is our profession and this is what we do," Awoniy said.
“I think I just want to assure all Nigerians that they should be supportive, they should try to support us.
“I know it might not look like what they have wanted but one thing is sure, Super Eagles will always be Super Eagles but it is not just saying we are the Super Eagles, it is us proving a point that we are the Super Eagles.
“Everyone here is capable and we are ready to go for it and I just want to assure every Nigerian that we will go into that field to do all our possible best and I mean all our possible best and by God's grace, we will come out victorious.”
Awoniyi and Victor Boniface are the first two strikers to arrive in camp, with Kelechi Iheanacho only arriving today, and Victor Osimhen is still yet to report.
It remains to be seen who will get Austin Eguavoen's nod to lead the attack on Saturday against the Cheetahs.
