Super Eagles coach arrival video: Eguavoen begins fourth stint in charge of three-time African champions
Published: September 03, 2024
Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager of the Super Eagles, has arrived in Uyo on Monday evening ahead of the team's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Republic of Benin and Rwanda.
The 59-year-old manager was seen entering the Super Eagles' hotel with his luggage in a video shared to reporters by the Nigeria Football Federation.
Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles player, was appointed interim manager after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) canceled the contract of German coach Bruno Labbadia.
Labbadia, initially set to take over following Finidi George's resignation, saw his contract terminated due to unresolved issues over tax payments.
Eguavoen is stepping in for his fourth tenure with the national team. His first stint was between 2005 and 2007, followed by interim roles in 2010 and 2022.
Most recently, he led the three-time African champions to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament and the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Unfortunately, under his leadership, Nigeria exited the AFCON in the Round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia and failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after playing out a 1-1 draw with the Black Stars of Ghana in Abuja.
The upcoming qualifiers will be crucial for Nigeria as they aim to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON tournament under Eguavoen's interim guidance.
Meanwhile, eleven players had reported for international duty as at last night, namely Stanley Nwabali, Wilfred Ndidi, Amas Obasogie, Victor Boniface, William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, Taiwo Awoniyi, Ademola Lookman, Olisa Ndah and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
