Rangers fail to pull off a last-minute swoop for Southampton forward Edozie
Published: August 31, 2024England youth international of Nigerian descent Samuel Edozie will be staying put at Southampton for the time being after failing to secure a loan move to Scottish Premiership side Rangers before the summer transfer window closed for business.
According to The Scottish Sun, the forward emerged as a late target for Rangers, who were unsuccessful in their pursuit of the promising youngster after failing to beat the transfer deadline.
Rangers coach Philippe Clement was pushing to close the deal for Edozie, but the discussions fell through in the final stages.
The 21-year-old has been given minutes in each of the three matches played by the Saints in the new season, coming off the bench for Premier League defeats to Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, before starting the eight-goal thriller against Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup.
Since joining from Manchester City in 2022, the dual-national player has participated in 63 games, twenty-six of which he started.
In search of adequate playing opportunities, Edozie was keen on a loan move to Rangers, only for the proposed deal to collapse.
It remains to be seen whether he will explore other opportunities in Europe, as the transfer windows in the Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey and Greece are still open.
The likes of Adam Armstrong, Ben Brereton Díaz and Maxwel Cornet are ahead of the Anglo-Nigerian in the pecking order of forwards at the St Mary's Stadium.
Edozie has a contract with Southampton until the end of the 2026-2027 season.
