Cardiff City left-back Collins will not be named in Super Eagles squad for 2025 Afconq in September
Published: August 25, 2024
Contrary to speculation in the local media, allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Cardiff City left-back Jamilu Collins will not be named in the Super Eagles squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches with Republic of Benin and Rwanda in September 2024.
Rumours had suggested that Collins had been recalled to the national team for the Super Eagles internationals next month but there is no truth in the reports that the defender would be returning to the team after missing the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches with South Africa and Benin due to fitness issues.
The former SC Paderborn star is not in the plans of the Nigeria Football Federation because he is currently sidelined by injury.
Collins was not called up for Cardiff City's first four competitive games of the new season due to the ailment, against Sunderland, Bristol Rovers, Burnley and Swansea City.
The 30-year-old suffered an injury during Cardiff City's pre-season friendly against Hertha Berlin in Austria, leading to his substitution in the 54th minute of the contest,
He faces at least six weeks on the sidelines, meaning he will not have recovered in time for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.
Since the conclusion of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Collins has played just four games for the Super Eagles, with the likes of Zaidu Sanusi, Bruno Onyemaechi and even Calvin Bassey ahead of him in the pecking order of left backs.
Porto defender Zaidu Sanusi is still undergoing rehabilitation from a cruciate ligament injury he suffered after his return from the Africa Cup of Nations and has not figured for the Portuguese giants in the new season.
