The Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday announced the Falconets roster for the upcoming 2024 Fifa U20 Women's World Cup holding in Colombia, 31 August – 22 September.
An analysis of the squad list revealed that three goalkeepers, six defenders, five midfielders and seven forwards have been selected by Nigeria U20s head coach Chris Danjuma.
The Nigeria roster is headlined by Madrid CFF striker Opeyemi Ajakaye who competed at the 2022 Fifa U17 Women's World Cup.
Last November, Ajakaye was shortlisted for the CAF Young Player of the Year award, alongside Super Falcons stars Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun, and seven other U21 players.
Apart from Ajakaye, five other players who have been called up to the Super Falcons in the past have been included on the Falconets roster, namely Jumoke Alani, Rofiat Imuran, Comfort Folorunsho, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu and Flourish Sabastine.
Nigeria will do battle with Germany, Venezuela and South Korea in Group D of the 2024 Women's U20 World Cup, and open group play against the Asians on September 1 at the Estadio El Techo in Bogotá, followed by meetings against the Europeans and South Americans on September 4 and September 7 respectively.
In preparation for the tournament, the Falconets, who have been training in Colombia since Monday, will face Australia in the first of two friendlies on Friday.
The clash with the girls from Down Under has been scheduled for 10am Colombia time (4pm Nigeria time) on Friday, at the Club Banco de la República in Bogota.
