PL2: Nigerian forward scores and assists for Arsenal in 4-2 win against Manchester United
Published: August 16, 2024Nigerian forward Nathan Butler-Oyedeji scored and assisted as Arsenal opened their Premier League 2 campaign with a 4-2 victory over Manchester United at Meadow Park on Friday night.
Coach Mehmet Ali named three Nigeria-eligible players in the starting lineup which included Butler-Oyedeji, Brian Okonkwo and Josh Nicols who was involved with the first team during pre-season.
Khayon Edwards gave the home side the lead in the 12th minute, converting the ball into the net from Ismeal Kabia's cross before Michal Rosak doubled their lead in the 35th minute.
Two minutes later, Butler-Oyedeji got himself on the scoresheet, after a beautiful piece of play to record his first goal of the session.
The 21-year-old was involved once again in Arsenal's fourth of the night as he assisted Edwards to put the home side into a comfortable position, heading into half time.
A minute after the restart, Ethan Ennis pulled one back for Manchester United before Ethan Williams was sent off to make the task of staging a comeback for the away side more difficult.
Three minutes before the stoppage time, Ethan Wheatley breached Okonkwo's goal once again to reduce the deficit but time had run out for Manchester United to stage a comeback.
Anglo-Nigerian fullback Habeeb Ogunneye started the game on the bench for the Red Devils but came on in the 65th minute as a substitute for Sam Mather.
