Central defender-turned-forward Uche scores to rescue point for Getafe on La Liga debut
Published: August 15, 2024Versatile Nigerian player Chrisantus Uche made a strong start to his La Liga career by scoring a goal on his debut for Getafe in a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames Stadium on Thursday night.
His 64th minute goal helped Getafe secure a point as the 2024/2025 La Liga campaign kicked off.
Uche was originally a centre-back when he arrived in Spain two years ago, before he was converted into a defensive midfielder.
Against Athletic Bilbao, manager Pepe Bordalás played him as a forward due to his height and lack of options up front.
Oihan Sancet opened the scoring for Bilbao in stunning fashion, with a goal that could potentially be a contender for Goal of the Season.
Sancet received a pass from Gorka Guruzeta and unleashed a powerful shot into the top right corner in the 27th minute.
Four minutes after the hour mark, Uche equalized for Getafe by heading in a corner kick from Luis Milla.
This goal helped Getafe start their 2024/2025 La Liga season with a point away from home.
The 21-year-old joined Getafe from AD Ceuta FC, a team in the Primera RFEF division in Spain, signing a four-year deal for a fee of 500,000 euros.
Getafe announced his signing in June, months after reportedly reaching an agreement in principle to secure the player.
Chrisantus Uche has previously represented Nigeria at youth level and a strong season could potentially earn him a call-up to the senior national team, the Super Eagles.
