'I want players who are fully committed' - Gent coach tears into wantaway Super Eagles defender Torunarigha
Published: August 09, 2024
Gent coach Wouter Vrancken has severely criticized Jordan Torunarigha, saying the Nigeria international is not fully committed to the club, with a transfer on the cards before the close of the summer transfer window.
Torunarigha was omitted from Gent's traveling squad to Denmark for their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round tie on Thursday amid speculation surrounding his future.
The Buffalos fear the Nigeria international could follow Tarik Tissoudali and Julien De Sart out of the exit door.
Vrancken has not been able to utilize the left-footed center back in the five competitive matches played by the club in the new season as he was a non-playing substitute versus Víkingur, before missing four games on the bounce.
Torunarigha has been linked with possible moves to Premier League, Serie A and Bundesliga clubs but the most concrete interest has come from Monza, who have made a bid of 3.5 million euros to sign the German-born Nigerian defender.
It has been suggested that the Hertha Berlin product has probably played his last game for Gent.
Explaining why Torunarigha was omitted from the roster for the trip to Denmark, Vrancken was quoted as saying by Voetbalkrant: "It's true that he didn't travel for extra-sporting reasons.
"I want players who are fully committed to the club and want to fight for the colours. That is not the case with Jordan at the moment."
Torunarigha has appeared in 104 official matches for The Buffalos, including 94 starts, and won the Belgian Cup in 2021-2022.
