2024 Olympic Games: Spain coach singles out one Super Falcons player for praise after win in Nantes
Published: July 29, 2024
Spain women's national team coach Montse Tomé singled out goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie for praise despite the Super Falcons' loss to the world champions in a 2024 Olympic Games Group C match held at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Sunday evening.
Two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas scored what proved to be the game winner in the 85th minute with a a cross-shot goal from a free-kick.
Against the best team in the world, Nnadozie put up a performance for the ages, enhancing her burgeoning reputation by making at least three fantastic saves to keep the scoreline level until the closing minutes.
Nigeria had chances to break the deadlock before Alexia Putellas' winner but the African powerhouse had problems with their finishing, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade spurning two gilt-edged chances.
Nnadozie was there to save Nigeria time and time again every single time Spain managed to get past the Super Falcons defenders, proving once again why she is undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in Africa.
Speaking to reporters after the game against Nigeria, Tome said: "I'm very happy. They had already ruled out a goal by Salma, which was offside. We had chances, Aitana had them, Alexia had them too, others.
"We knew that Nnadozie was a good goalkeeper. In addition, her style of play conditioned us a lot because of the long shots she has."
Nnadozie should have done better to prevent the goal the Super Falcons conceded as she was expecting a cross but Alexia Putellas opted to shoot straight at goal.
