'A great goalkeeper' - Legendary Brazil forward Marta hails Super Falcons star Chiamaka Nnadozie
Published: July 26, 2024
Legendary Brazil forward Marta has lauded Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie for her performance during the 2024 Olympic Games clash between the two continental powerhouses on Thursday evening
All eyes were on Marta as the two countries stepped out on to the Stade Matmut-Atlantique (Bordeaux) turf for their Group C opener as she had the opportunity to equal a record for the most goals scored in the Olympics, considering men and women.
In addition, the Orlando Pride superstar was targeting being the first player – male or female – to score a goal at six consecutive Olympics.
Marta thought she had opened the scoring in the 36th minute but the goal was disallowed for offside by Gabi Portilho.
A minute later, she provided what proved to be the game-winning assist, delivering a brilliant reverse pass to Gabi Nunes, who controlled it with two touches before blasting the ball into the net.
Marta praised Nnadozie, labeling her 'a great goalkeeper' as she spoke about her disallowed goal and assist.
Speaking post-match, she told Globo: "It was frustrating (the disallowed goal), of course. But the most important thing is that we didn't complain, we kept chasing and then we managed to find a pass for Gabi, she was lucky and scored the winning goal.
"I was very emotional at that moment, I felt like I was scoring the goal too.
"I saw Gabi's movement, I managed to pass it perfectly and she hit a great shot, beating the Nigerian goalkeeper, who is a great goalkeeper."
Nnadozie posted four consecutive clean sheets in the qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games, in matches against Cameroon and South Africa.
