Marc Guehi: England's superstar defender is on the radar of the Premier League's biggest clubs
Published: July 22, 2024“I think Marc Guehi has been the most consistent performer from start to finish. He has been ridiculous and again, the first tournament for him as well. He has been great.”
The above is a quote from former England centre back Rio Ferdinand on the performances of Marc Guehi. Although Guehi couldn’t quite lead England to European Championship glory, his performances at the back of England’s defence was one of the major positives for a team that largely struggled.
Immediately becoming a core member for the Eagles, Guehi was made the captain and cemented himself as one of the very best defenders in the Premier League.
Having caught the eye of the biggest teams in the Premier League this summer, the race to prise Guehi out of Crystal Palace is on.
With no shortage of suitors we take a look at where England’s star centre back may end up.
The clubs in for Marc Guehi
1. Arsenal
Over the past two seasons Arsenal have emerged out of the shadows and have been Manchester City’s nearest rivals.
Although they haven’t been able to get their hands on the Premier League trophy, Mikel Arteta has assembled a talented squad and it’s widely anticipated that this season they could finally go one place better.
Defensively Arsenal have been brilliant over the last two seasons with William Saliba and Gabriel proving to be a formidable partnership, however how long that partnership will remain in tact for remains to be seen.
Saliba has suitors all over Europe and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Real Madrid had their sights on the extremely talented Frenchman.
Gabriel has his admirers in both Italy and further afield and if the rumours are to be believed, he was close to exiting the club last summer.
With Saliba one of Arsenal’s best players, it is likely that Guehi could be Gabriel’s natural replacement. The two possess similar traits and the Crystal Palace man would have no issues in fitting right in alongside Saliba.
Whether Arsenal would be willing to invest in a position where they are already strong remains to be seen but if Guehi were to join the Gunners they would have a real shot at Premier League glory.
2. Manchester United
Arsenal may be spoilt for choice at the back but Manchester United definitely aren’t. With Raphael Varane leaving the club and Lisandro Martinez battling a string of injury problems, United are in need of quality in the heart of their defence and Guehi could be the man to provide it.
Under Utd’s new ownership, Jim Ratcliffe wants to return Utd back to their glory days and they will step up efforts to sign the very best young English talent. In Guehi they would definitely have that.
Whereas in previous years Utd have been able to be frivolous with what they spend, the purse strings will be tighter this time around. Ratcliffe has already stated that “it will take two or three summer windows to get to a better place. I’m not confident that we’ll solve all the problems in the first transfer window.”
With Utd needing to be sensible with the positions they reinvest in, they will need to ensure that Guehi is high up on the priority list.
3. Chelsea
One team that is never shy to dip their toes into the transfer market is Chelsea. Having spent well over a billion pounds since Todd Boehly took the reins of the club, Chelsea could well look to bring Guehi back to the club.
Similarly to Utd, Chelsea have to be careful with what they spend and like Arsenal they are well stocked when it comes to their central defence options.
Although it would be a move that the Chelsea fans would love, it doesn’t seem likely to take place this summer.
Would any other teams in the Premier League be after Guehi?
Of the teams we have already listed, it is most likely that Guehi will end up joining one of those clubs.
With Virgil Van Dijks’s contract coming to an end, Liverpool could see Guehi as the perfect replacement. Often savvier when it comes to what they choose to invest in the transfer market, Liverpool have shown in the past that if they like a player they will often spare no expense when it comes to getting their targets.
Although they won’t be front runners for Guehi’s signature they could be a surprise entrant into the race.
The other team who might be worth monitoring are Newcastle United. The Toon Army have deep pockets and as last season showed, they are a little short when it comes to the centre back positions.
Whilst Sven Botman and Fabian Schar are one of the Premier League’s best duos, there isn’t a great deal of quality behind them. Newcastle already boast some exciting English talent and Guehi would certainly add to that.
With the team looking to become a consistent force towards the top end of the table the signing of Guehi could help them achieve exactly that.
The battle to sign Guehi won’t be easy
With the race to sign Guehi well and truly on, acquiring him from Palace certainly won’t be easy. Palace have shown time and time again that they won’t be bullied into selling their best players and until the price they set is met, their captain won’t be going anywhere.
In order to move ahead, competing clubs will need to move quickly and be willing to stump up the cash that Palace are demanding. Worthy of starting for any team in the Premier League, whoever gets their hands on Guehi will have one of the best young defenders in the Premier League.
One way that the teams after Guehi may be able to raise cash is through sponsorship. Sponsorships provide crucial revenue streams and while Chelsea fans have criticised the club for being unwilling to take on board casino sponsors, Manchester United has as many as 3 gambling sponsors in its arsenal.
By sponsoring soccer clubs, gambling brands not only increase their recognition, but also release new exciting football-themed games.
