Two Nigerian defenders named in Man Utd squad for pre-season friendly against Rangers
Published: July 20, 2024Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has taken two Nigeria-eligible defenders to Scotland for his side's pre-season friendly against Premiership giants Rangers.
The Red Devils will take on Rangers in their second pre-season friendly at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Dutch football tactician has included right-back Habeeb Ogunneye and defender Maximillian Oyedele in his 26-man traveling squad to Edinburgh.
With some first team players yet to report for pre-season activities due to their participation in the recently concluded 2024 European Championship and Copa America, Ten Hag has promoted Ogunneye and Oyedele to first team training to make up the numbers.
Oyedele and Ogunneye got first team minutes in United's narrow loss to Norwegian giants Rosenborg in the first of their pre-season games, with the fullback coming off the bench to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the versatile defender replacing Casemiro at halftime.
There is a possibility of the duo sharing the same pitch with new signing Leny Yoro, who is in contention to make his unofficial debut for United following his big money move from Lille.
Oyedele has a bit of first team experience, having made sixteen appearances in total during loan spells at Altrincham and Forest Green Rovers.
After the friendly against Rangers, Manchester United's next fixture is an exciting clash against Premier League rivals Arsenal at SoFi Stadium in California on July 28, 2024.
