Copa America : Abuja-born Minnesota United forward becomes cap-tied to Canada
Published: July 14, 2024
Minnesota United forward Tani Oluwaseyi is no longer eligible to represent three-time African champions Nigeria, allnigeriasocer.com reports.
Born in Nigeria's capital Abuja, Oluwaseyi became cap-tied to Canada during the ongoing Copa America, where he was given minutes in every single game played by Les Rouges, with the exception of their opening day defeat to defending champions Argentina.
By making his competitive debut against Peru on June 26, the 24-year-old followed in the footsteps of Sam Adekugbe, Iké Ugbo, Tesho Akindele and Ayo Akinola, who were all eligible to represent Nigeria before pledging their futures to Canada.
When Oluwaseyi was 10, he and his family relocated to Canada, choosing Mississauga, Ontario as their new home.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch handed him his fist call-up for two pre-Copa America friendlies against Netherlands and France, and he went on to make his debut against the 2018 world champions.
This season, Oluwaseyi has been a standout performer for Minnesota United, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.
Having featured in fifteen league games, with six starts, he is Minnesota United's top scorer, netting one more than South Africa international Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Finland star Robin Lod.
Canada have named American-Canadian-Nigerian midfielder Simi Awujo in their squad for the 2024 Olympic Games and she's in line to face the Super Falcons in a friendly on July 17 in Sevilla, Spain.
