2025 AFCONQ draw: Super Eagles to face 2026 WCQ foes Benin and Rwanda; Libya also in Group D
Published: July 04, 2024
The Super Eagles have been placed in Group D for the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, alongside familiar opponents Republic of Benin and Rwanda, who are also in the same group with Nigeria in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The draw ceremony, held at the SuperSport studio in Johannesburg, South Africa, also placed Libya in the same group as Nigeria.
Under the guidance of former Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr, Republic of Benin secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The defeat dealt a significant blow to Nigeria's qualification hopes for the tournament and subsequently prompted the resignation of Finidi George, who had been appointed as the team's coach just a month earlier.
The qualifiers will see the top two teams from each group directly qualify for the AFCON finals, scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
Morocco, as the host nation, automatically qualifies regardless of their group stage performance, leaving one additional team to advance from their group.
Nigeria's road to the tournament will involve matches scheduled across FIFA international windows in September, October, and November of this year.
With Libya and Rwanda rounding out Group D, the Super Eagles face a challenging but navigable path to secure their place in the continental showcase.
