Finidi's replacement: Musa confirms NFF are not in talks with flamboyant French coach Herve Renard
Published: June 25, 2024
Following the resignation of Finidi George as head coach of the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, speculation has been rife about potential successors.
One prominent name emerging in discussions is that of flamboyant French manager Herve Renard, who is known for his success across African football.
Finidi , a former Super Eagles player himself, stepped down after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced plans to appoint a technical adviser for the senior national team.
The decision came in the wake of disappointing results during the June qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Nigeria managed a 1-1 draw against South Africa and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.
The rumors linking former Ivory Coast, Angola, Zambia and Morocco coach Renard to the Super Eagles coaching role have stirred considerable interest among football enthusiasts.
However, Alhaji Idris Abdullahi Musa, a Congress member of the Nigeria Football Federation, has refuted these claims.
Musa clarified that the Nigerian Federation have not engaged in any formal discussions with potential candidates, including Renard.
"I was with the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation and Technical Committee of the Federation last week. I can tell you the Federation has not spoken to any coach," Musa told allnigeriasoccer.com.
"The president of the Nigerian Federation follows protocol. He allows the technical committee to do their job and they will revert to him when they are done with it."
Musa further urged patience from the Nigerian public, stating, "I think we should wait for the Federation to communicate with us. For now, the Federation has not spoken to any coach."
Nigeria faces the possibility of missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Presently, the three-time African champions occupy fifth place in Group C of the qualifiers, having garnered three points from four matches.
