Is Finidi going? Nigerian Federation president quizzed on the future of Super Eagles coach
Published: June 13, 2024
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has remained tight-lipped regarding the future of Super Eagles coach Finidi George, following a crucial meeting with the coach and Sports Minister Senator John Enoh.
Speculation swirled around Finidi's position after Nigeria's disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they managed a 1-1 draw against South Africa and suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Republic of Benin.
With Nigeria currently sitting fifth in their group, garnering only three points from four matches, there's growing concern about the team's chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After the defeat to Benin, the Sports Minister convened a meeting with Finidi George and the Nigerian Federation.
Following extensive deliberations lasting about three hours, President Gusau refrained from commenting on Finidi's future.
Despite expressing optimism about Nigeria's prospects, Gusau acknowledged the team's current predicament and assured Nigerians of the NFF's commitment to implementing comprehensive measures aimed at revitalizing the team.
When asked to provide an update on the future of Finidi, Gusau told reporters: "It's a very sad moment for Nigerian football, we cannot run away from that but all I want to assure you is that we are working tirelessly in conjunction with the Minister to see that we come out with some holistic measures that will change the entire system so that we can move forward.
"Don't forget that it's still possible and we are going to make it and I want to assure you that we are going to fight it to the latter and Nigeria will qualify to the World Cup.
"This is not something I'll say now. Very soon you are going to see the measures that NFF will come out with and by the grace of God those measures that we are going to take will lead us to qualify to the next World Cup.
"And don't also forget we have the AFCON qualifiers before the next round of World Cup qualifiers and by the Grace of God that will show Nigerians the steps we are going to take to make sure we qualify for the World Cup."
The NFF president's failure to endorse or refute these speculations has fueled further uncertainty surrounding Finidi's tenure.
