Fabrizio Romano confirms Arsenal hope to keep Obi-Martin despite Bayern, Borussia Dortmund interest
Published: June 11, 2024Italian transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal have not given up hope on tying Danish-born Nigerian center forward Chido Obi-Martin to a new contract amid concrete interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
The Denmark U17 international has nineteen days left before his schoolboy registration with the Gunners expires.
Obi-Martin is among the players of Nigerian descent offered a scholarship by Arsenal ahead of next season, the others being goalkeeper Owen Asemota and Andre Annous.
In addition, the Emirates Stadium outfit have offered the striker a professional contract to be signed when he turns seventeen in November 2024.
Ob-Martin made a splash in the 2023-2024 season, scoring a remarkable 32 goals in eighteen appearances in the U18 Premier League, setting a club record for the highest number of goals scored by a player in a single season.
The 16-year-old, technically an U16 player in the recently concluded season, played up his age group, making debuts in the FA Youth Cup, Premier League 2 and UEFA Youth League.
Speaking to CaughtOffside for his latest Daily Briefing column, Romano explained: "Despite some talks of Arsenal wonderkid Chido Obi Martin now being in advanced negotiations with Bayern Munich, I’m told the situation with Obi Martin is still open.
"Bayern and Borussia Dortmund have been showing interest in the talented young striker for months, but Arsenal are still there and still trying to get him to sign a new contract and keep Chido at the club. Let’s see what happens in the next days."
Obi-Martin shone for the Danish team at the 2024 European U17 Championship in Cyprus, helping the Scandinavians reach the semifnals where they were beaten by eventual champions Italy.
