2026 WCQ: Benin captain Steve Mounie reveals the one advantage Cheetahs have over Super Eagles
Published: June 10, 2024
Benin captain Steve Mounie has pointed out that the Cheetahs have an advantage over the Super Eagles in Monday's 2026 World Cup qualifying match due to the fact that they have had an extra day to prepare for the matchday four fixture compared to Nigeria.
The Cheetahs faced Rwanda last Thursday, while the Super Eagles were in action against South Africa's Bafana Bafana a day later.
Gernot Rohr's squad remained in Abidjan following the match, while the Super Eagles journeyed to Ivory Coast and acquainted themselves with the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny pitch shortly after arriving.
Mounie emphasized that the Cheetahs having more time to prepare for the game could prove to be a key advantage as they aim to make it back-to-back wins for the first time under manager Gernot Rohr.
Speaking at Sunday's press conference, Mounie told reporters: "The advantage is that we had one more day of recovery compared to Nigeria. We are going to give it our all."
The Cheetahs head into the matchday four fixture brimming with confidence, buoyed by their win against Rwanda thanks to Dokou Dodo's powerful volley in the first half following a corner kick.
Benin are seeking to make history by winning their first-ever international game against Nigeria after suffering twelve losses in fourteen previous encounters while drawing two games.
