'We are ready for it' - Super Eagles history-making striker Onuachu tells fans what to expect v Bafana Bafana
Published: June 07, 2024
Paul Onuachu has told Super Eagles fans to expect their first win of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Friday when they battle Group C rivals Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, under the lights.
With only two points garnered from their opening two games of the World Cup qualifiers following draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, the Super Eagles are condemned to win as many games as they can to put themselves in the best possible position to qualify for the mundial.
Onuachu was among the Super Eagles players that reported to camp late as a result of the Labour Union strike that disrupted domestic flights.
The Southampton striker highlighted that the Super Eagles have the tendency to rise to the occasion when the chips are down.
Speaking to Modzero Media's chief Victor Modo, Onuachu said: "They should expect fight and of course three points, that's what I'll tell them.
"They should expect that we are going to fight for the country and we know what they want and we're going to make sure we execute that perfectly."
The lanky striker, scorer of Nigeria's fastest goal in history at international level, added: "One thing you have to know about Nigeria, when it really matters, when people think they cannot make it, that's when we show.
"This game we are really ready for it. We know how important it is. We know the expectation of the fans, we are playing at home so I think we will give it all.
"The most important thing is to give everything and then at the end of the day I think we will come out with a victory."
Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers is delicately poised at the moment. On Thursday night, a huge lifeline was given to the Super Eagles thanks to Republic of Benin beating table-toppers Rwanda 1-0.
If the Super Eagles win tonight, they would leapfrog from fourth to the top spot in Group C.
