Ex-Wolves star comments on the future of Dessers amid Rangers links with Hearts' Lawrence Shankland
Published: June 02, 2024Former Wolverhampton Wanderers star Kenny Miller reckons that Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers will leave Rangers this summer.
The Belgian-born striker joined the Scottish champions from Italian side Cremonese last summer but has not impressed a lot with his performance.
Despite scoring a decent 22 goals across all competitions, there is a majority consensus that he could have scored more if he had been more clinical in the penalty area.
The performance of the Nigerian forward has led to the call that Rangers will need to sign a new striker if they are to compete against bitter rivals Celtic who beat them to the League title as well as the Scottish Cup.
This explains the link with Hearts striker and Scotland international Lawrence Shankland who scooped the PFA Scotland Players' Player of the Year and Scottish Football Writers Association Footballer of the Year for the last campaign.
Miller has stated that Dessers will leave Ibrox this summer if Rangers sign Shankland or any other striker, apparently due to the possibility of having his gametime affected by the arrival of a new forward.
"Roofe is moving on which leaves Cyriel Dessers and Danilo as the two main centre-forwards," he wrote in his column for Daily Record.
"Now, it's absolutely vital that Clement signs a new No.9. He should probably have done it in January to boost the title bid.
"But if he does get a new striker in – whether that's Hearts' Lawrence Shankland or anyone else – I can't see Dessers and Danilo being happy as back-ups.
"The manager would probably look to move one of them on. And after the season he's just had, scoring 23 goals, Dessers will probably attract more interest."
The Nigerian international has played in four different top leagues during his career, including the Jupiler Pro League, Dutch Eredivisie, Italian Serie A, and Scottish Premiership.
Dessers might be on the move once more if he feels unsettled with the Light Blues.
