'Confused Adeyemi' - Super Falcons GK Nnadozie praises Thibaut Courtois for not running out of his line
Published: June 02, 2024
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has praised Thibaut Courtois for the role he played in preventing a certain goal during the first half of Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday night.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper had an injury plagued season, limiting his appearances to just five in all competitions.
If it hadn't been for Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid would have been three goals down heading into the interval.
At the midway point of the first half, Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi missed a glorious opportunity to give the Germans the lead.
The cap-tied Germany international of Nigerian descent attempted to round Courtois after collecting a defence-splitting pass from Mats Hummels but the Los Blancos goalkeeper opted not to rush out of his line and pushed the forward wide.
Real Madrid defender Carvajal was alert to the danger and narrowed Adeyemi's chances of getting his shot on target.
In her post-match analysis on SuperSport, Nnadozie said: "For me, I think that should have been a goal. He (Adeyemi) had a lot of chances to put the ball into the net.
"That's why the coach of Real Madrid brought in Thibaut Courtois because as a well experienced goalkeeper, when there's a 1v1 you don't give the striker the chance to score, you just stay.
"I think he standing there confused Adeyemi and that was a really good one."
Thibaut Courtois is widely regarded as one of the top three goalkeepers in the world and was awarded the 2022 Yashin Trophy for beng the best performing goalkeeper in the world.
