2026 WCQ: Hugo Broos reveals Bafana Bafana's target for blockbuster clash against Nigeria in Uyo
Published: June 01, 2024
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has revealed that the 1996 African champions are targeting at least a draw when they face off with African powerhouse Nigeria in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Friday, June 7.
Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was thrown wide open after South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of underdogs Rwanda on a poor playing surface.
Heading into the third round of matches, South Africa trail group leaders Rwanda by one point and hold a one-point advantage over the Super Eagles.
Broos emphasized that South Africa must avoid any further slip-ups in their two games this month to achieve their goal of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010.
Speaking to reporters during his squad announcement, Broos said: "The only thing I like to see is that we have four points from six and not less that that. Three is not enough, four is good, six would be fantastic.
"We can play a draw in Nigeria, this is not a bad result but we have to win against Zimbabwe. You have to win your home games when you have qualifiers. If you win your home games and you can take another victory away I think you are very close.
"For us, the defeat to Rwanda was not good. I would have been happy if we drew to get four points from six. These two points, we have to take them somewhere else.
"We are on schedule if we can take it in Nigeria and win against Zimbabwe. We cannot permit ourselves to lose unusual points - when you lose the game in Nigeria or don't win against Zimbabwe."
South Africa have fond memories of their last visit to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, beating the Super Eagles 2-0 thanks to goals from Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau.
