Ex- contender for Super Eagles job, Michael Nsien hands USA U19 call-up to D.C. United's Nigerian CB
Published: June 01, 2024
Former contender for the Super Eagles coaching job, Michael Nsien has announced the United States U19 roster for a training camp in South America, with a player of Nigerian descent part of the group.
The United States U19s will play matches against Argentina on June 7 in Buenos Aires and Uruguay on June 11 in Montevideo.
D.C. United central defender Matai Akinmboni is set to add to his international caps for United States youth teams as he has been named to the squad list.
The Maryland native is also eligible to represent the national teams of Nigeria and Ghana through his parentage.
The United States are using the friendlies as part of their preparations for the Concacaf U20 Championship which will take place in Guanajuato, Mexico between July 20 and August 4, with the top four countries qualifying for next year's Fifa U20 World Cup.
Akinmboni will become provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth if he's selected for the Concacaf U20 Championship and participates in the tournament.
The 17-year-old has made seven appearances in Major League Soccer and has also represented D.C. United in the US Open Cup.
When he made his MLS debut against Real Salt Lake in September 2022 at the age of fifteen, he was the third youngest player in history to feature in the MLS, behind only Freddy Adu and Alphonso Davies.
Last month, D.C United loaned out the promising defender to Loudoun United FC in the United Soccer League (USL) Championship through December 31, 2024, with a recall option at any point included in the agreement.
