Benin Federation confirm 16-goal French-born forward is uncertain to play against Super Eagles

Benin coach Gernot Rohr is sweating on the fitness of Caen-owned forward Andréas Hountondji ahead of the Cheetahs' 2026 World Cup qualifying match against the Super Eagles.

Born in France to a Beninese father and French mother,  Hountondji was forced off injured during the second half of Ligue 1/Ligue 2 playoff match between his club Rodez and Saint-Étienne on May 24.

He had a breakout season at Rodez, registering sixteen goals and seven assists in thirty-nine appearances across all competitions.

Hountondji has yet to report for international duty in Abidjan as he is being assessed by his club's medical team.

According to a press release by the Fédération Béninoise de Football, tests showed that the 21-year-old has not suffered a hamstring injury and will undergo a second test on Saturday, June 1.

The Fédération Béninoise de Football added that the forward is uncertain to feature in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria.

Nigeria will battle Benin's Cheetahs at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan on June 10, three days after their meeting with Bafana Bafana in Uyo.

Benin, under the guidance of Gernot Rohr, started preparing for the World Cup qualifiers on Monday and in the third day of training, seventeen of the invited players were in attendance,
