Nigeria handed boost as Atletico Madrid striker is left out of Spain's provisional Euro 2024 squad

The Nigeria Football Federation remain in the race to secure the services of talented Atletico Madrid attacker Samuel Omorodion at senior level, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation on Monday morning announced the country's provisional squad for the 2024 European Championship, with Omorodion not part of the 29-man group.

Spain national team boss Luis de la Fuente has included two uncapped players in the squad, Barcelona's Fermín López and ex-Leicester City forward Ayoze Pérez.

Despite being an U21 player, Omorodion would have become cap-tied to Spain, his country of birth, if he had been named in the European Championship squad and participated in the competition.

The 20-year-old became provisionally cap-tied to Spain on July 4, 2023, after coming off the bench for the final eighteen minutes of a 2-1 victory against Iceland in a European U19 Championship qualifier.

The Melilla native had a breakout season at Deportivo Alavés while on loan from parent club Atletico Madrid, scoring 8 goals in 35 appearances, leading to a scramble for his signature this summer.

Omorodion was a member of Spain's squad to last year's U19 Euro in Malta, where he made three appearances off the bench.

Spain, the joint most successful team in the history of the European Championship with three titles won, will face Croatia, Italy and Albania in the group stage of Euro 2024.
