Red-hot Atalanta forward Lookman fires warning to Bafana Bafana with goal against Torino
Published: May 26, 2024Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman scored a goal for Atalanta in their 3-0 win over Torino on Sunday, sending a warning to South Africa ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifier on June 7th.
Lookman, who recently made history by scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final, added to his impressive goal tally for the season with a close-range strike just before halftime.
This goal brings his total to 16 in all competitions including ten in the Italian top-flight.
The 26-year-old was in top form throughout the Europa League campaign, scoring five goals and providing one assist.
His performances earned him a place in the Europa League Team of the Season and Player of the Week honors. He is also in contention for the competition's goal of the season award.
Lookman's recent success has made him a key player for the Nigerian national team. He was recently called up by new coach Finidi George for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.
South Africa, who will be particularly wary of Lookman's threat, will need to be on their guard to avoid any defensive slip-ups that could be exploited by the in-form forward.
Lookman has already shown his ability to perform on the big stage, having scored three goals and provided one assist at AFCON 2023, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament.
Despite his impressive performances, he ended up on the losing side in both the AFCON final and the Coppa Italia final earlier this year.
The former England youth international has racked up twenty-one caps for Nigeria and has registered six goals.
