Official: Son of former Super Eagles right-back released by West Brom
Published: May 22, 2024
With a statement on their official website, Championship club West Brom have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.
The Baggies failed in their bid to secure promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs, losing 3-1 to Southampton on aggregate in the semifinals.
West Brom have confirmed that Ruben Shakpoke is among the seven youngsters leaving the club upon the expiry of their contracts.
Ruben is the son of former Super Eagles defender Jero Shakpoke, who was earmarked by ex-Nigeria coach Bora Milutinović to be the first choice right-back at the 1998 World Cup, only for him to suffer a career threatening injury in a pre-World Cup friendly against Netherlands eight days before Nigeria's opener against Spain.
Ruben Shakpoke is departing West Brom after the club passed up the opportunity to trigger a twelve-month extension in his current deal which runs out on June 30, 2024.
A striker by trade, Ruben joined the Baggies last summer following a successful trial.
The 20-year-old, who has been called up to train with the Young Lions in the past, previously played for the academy teams of Norwich City and Aston Villa.
Super Eagles players Semi Ajayi and Josh Maja still have valid contracts with West Brom and have been retained for the 2024-2025 season.
