Ex-Celtic midfielder tears into Dessers after close-range miss in Rangers' six-goal thriller v Hearts
Published: May 18, 2024
Former Celtic Women midfielder Leanne Crichton has criticized Cyriel Dessers for missing a golden opportunity in Rangers 3-3 draw with Hearts in the final matchday of the Scottish Premiership, played at the Tynecastle Stadium on Saturday.
In the 20th minute of the clash, Ross McCausland won possession in the Hearts box, fed it to Dessers who could only fire the ball straight at the goalkeeper.
The Super Eagles forward missed another good chance in the second half, failing to hit the target after he had been picked out by Robbie Fraser but the miss wasn't as bad as the earlier mentioned chance.
He would go on to assist Todd Cantwell for his goal in the 69th minute- James Tavernier passed the ball to the 29-year-old who held the ball up properly before assisting Cantwell.
Reacting on BBC Sportsound via Ibrox News,Crichton called out Dessers for being unable to convert his chance in the 20th minute, drawing a comparison between him and Lawrence Shankland while doing so.
"You're looking at two strikers at opposite ends of the pitch – Dessers, who struggles to score from six yards and somehow manages to find the keeper, and Lawrence Shankland [with] an unbelievable, classy dink over Jack Butland," Crichton said.
"He's got pretty much three-quarters of the goal to hit, we're going to see a better angle here, Ross McCausland puts it on a plate for Dessers and he somehow manages to put it clean into the arms of Clark. It's an incredible miss."
Rangers have been linked with a move for Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland which has put Dessers position at Ibrox in bad position, as the club may offload him.
With the Scottish Premiership coming to a close today, the Nigeria international could only score 16 goals, comprising three in the top six split and 13 during the regular season.
