2019 Fifa U17 World Cup star Akinkunmi Amoo trialing at 9-time Azerbaijani champions
Published: May 04, 2024Former Golden Eaglets star Akinkunmi Amoo is undergoing trials with nine-time Azerbaijani champions Neftchi Baku with a view to a transfer.
The Sidos FC product, who made a splash at the 2019 Fifa U17 World Cup with three assists for the national team, is currently unemployed after mutually terminating his contract with Cypriot club Omonia Nicosia.
Amoo and Omonia Nicosia ended their association in March 2024, citing personal reasons.
According to azerisport.com, via bold.dk, Amoo is on trial at Neftchi Baku in Azerbaijan and it remains to be seen whether he will be offered a contract.
After starring at the 2019 Fifa U17 World Cup, the winger arrived Scandinavia with a huge reputation as one of the best young prospects in African football, and he lived up to expectations at Swedish Allsvenskan side Hammarby, for whom he scored 13 goals in 48 all-competition appearances.
He earned himself a move to FC Copenhagen on the back of his outstanding performances for Hammarby but did not hit the heights expected of him due to a combination of injury, loss of form and off-the-field issues.
Amoo played in four matches for FC Copenhagen before he was let go and made six appearances for Omonia Nicosia.
The 21-year-old was called up for the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs versus Ghana but did not make his senior debut.
