'He's a better finisher' - Ex-Everton forward makes big claim over Cyriel Dessers and Kemar Roofe
Published: April 18, 2024Former Everton forward James McFadden believes Kemar Roofe is a better finisher than Cyriel Dessers and that the former should be starting ahead of the latter for Rangers.
Roofe has battled with his fitness for the larger chunk of the season and was handed a start ahead of Dessers in Rangers barren draw with Dundee yesterday.
Despite being one of the Light Blues top scorers this season, the Super Eagles forward performances have divided opinions, having shown his capacity to miss and convert chances.
The 29-year-old was wasteful during the loss to Ross County last weekend and couldn't make amends when he came on against Dundee.
Speaking to Sky Sports via footballscotland, McFadden declared that Roofe is more clinical than Dessers and is surprised why it has taken so long for the former to start a game ahead of the latter.
"Clearly he's fit enough to train every day and be available. I think that if Kemar Roofe had one of the two chances that Dessers had at the weekend [against Ross County], he'd have scored one of them at least," McFadden remarked.
"I can say that because I think that he would have scored them, I'm projecting that he would have scored them. He's a better finisher.
"So if Kemar Roofe – we know he's good at holding up the play, we know he's good at leading the line, if he can just get into the game and you give him chances, I think he can take them, because he's the best finisher that they have.
"I think that it's not unusual, Philippe Clement normally makes a lot of changes anyway, and I think that maybe that's within his thinking that, if they can get opportunities, Kemar Roofe's more likely to take them instead of Dessers."
With the hope of relinquishing the league title from Celtic gradually slipping away, Philippe Clement will have a bold call to make on who should be his first choice striker between the Nigeria international and the Jamaican forward.
Both strikers have 14 league goals between them and Clement will be needing them to be at their clinical best if the Gers are to beat Celtic to the Scottish Premiership.
