Europa League: Chukwueze won't be in the squad to face Rennes tomorrow, says AC Milan coach
Published: February 14, 2024
AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has ruled out the participation of Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze in the first leg of his side's UEFA Europa League knockout round play-offs against Rennes at the San Siro on Thursday..
The 24-year-old just returned from international duty, having represented Nigeria in the concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, making five appearances in the tournament.
He last featured for AC Milan in their 1-0 victory over Sassuolo in a Serie A encounter last December, coming on as a late substitute for Rafael Leão.
Despite returning to Italy ahead of the Rossoneri's UEFA Europa League tie with Rennes, Pioli during his pre-match conference earlier today has ruled out the involvement of the Nigeria international for the clash.
"Making choices and excluding players is always difficult but it's also true that I know that I have players coming off the bench who can change a game, " he told AC Milan's official website.
"Chukwueze is back with us now; he won't be in the squad tomorrow but I hope he's available for Monza."
Chukwuze could make his return on Sunday when AC Milan face Monza on matchday 25 of the Serie A which will be played at Stadio Brianteo.
It has not been a bright start to life for the dazzling Nigerian winger at the San Siro, failing to nail to place in the starting lineup having made just 9 starts.
He has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season and has three goal involvements.
