Osimhen's new deal: Implications for Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino
Published: December 14, 2023
Italian journalist and transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, yesterday confirmed that Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has agreed in principle to extend his contract with the current Serie A defending champions, keeping him tied to the club until the summer of 2026.
The 24-year-old Nigerian was the main man upfront for the Partenopei last term, scoring 26 goals to fire Napoli to their first Scudetto in more than three decades.
His new deal is a statement of intent from the club, but has implications for potential suitors Chelsea and their manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Chelsea in recent times, had been reportedly linked with making a big-money move for the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner in the summer, with owner Todd Boehly expected to back Pochettino heavily in the transfer market.
However, Napoli have moved swiftly to ward off any potential interest by securing Osimhen's future.
The deal reportedly contains a release clause of around €130 million that comes into effect in 2024 - a sign Napoli may accept losing their star forward in a year or two's time for the right price.
For Pochettino and Chelsea, missing out on Osimhen would be a blow. The Argentine is eager to put his stamp on the Blues' squad following his arrival last month, and saw the powerful Nigerian as an ideal fit to lead the line.
Chelsea now face an uphill battle to convince Napoli to part ways with their prized asset, and may be forced to explore alternative forward options instead next summer.
The new contract is also a signal of Napoli's lofty ambitions - with Osimhen likely to commit his future, they likely fancy their chances of having another shot at lifting the Scudetto next season.
Additionally for the player himself, the deal is reward for his excellent development in Italy over the past three years.
