'Not at all to be honest' - Akpom admits he was not treated humanely in his first two months at Ajax
Published: November 06, 2023
Chuba Akpom has revealed that he is enjoying a new lease of life under Ajax's new manager John van 't Schip, which has contributed to his upturn in form.
It was a rough start for the former Middlesbrough forward who was not close to the form that saw him emerge as the best player in the English Championship last season but it appears that he is beginning to regain his mojo.
He bagged his first brace for Ajax in their 4-1 win over SC Heerenveen, thereby making it back-to-back games that he has found the back of the net in the Eredivisie.
The Arsenal alum stressed that he was not treated humanely in his first two months as an Ajax Amsterdam player, during the tenure of Maurice Steijn as coach.
When asked whether he felt he was not treated humanely, Akpom told ESPN, via Voetbal Primeur : "Not at all to be honest. It was very tough.
"I tried to present myself professionally. But in a different country, a different environment and a different team, in a hotel, it was really difficult.
"It feels like I was left alone for the first two months. A lot has happened recently, we were not the normal Ajax. But with two victories in a row, there is confidence again and things can only get better."
Ajax Amsterdam have now won two consecutive games for the first time in the Eredivisie this season.
They next face Brighton & Hove on matchday four of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
