Germany provisionally cap-tie two Bayer Leverkusen attack-minded players eligible for Nigeria
Published: October 17, 2023Bayer Leverkusen attack-minded duo of Nigerian descent, Francis Onyeka and Ken Izekor became provisionally cap-tied to Germany this week after featuring in a 2024 European U17 Championship qualifier against Liechtenstein, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Onyeka, an attacking midfielder, and Izekor, who is a center forward, earned caps for Germany U16 national team before being named in the starting lineup in the 6-0 rout of Liechtenstein - their first competitive game for Germany's youth teams.
Football's governing body, Fifa has to approve a change of association request for both players should they decide to switch allegiance from Germany to Nigeria in the future.
Onyeka was the standout performer in the win over Liechtenstein having netted a hat-trick, while Izekor scored Germany's third goal.
The two German-Nigerian teenagers currently play for Bayer Leverkusen's U19 team in the U19-Bundesliga West.
Newly-capped Nigeria international Jordan Torunarigha was provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth, Germany before he changed his association.
With the KAA Gent defender's request granted by Fifa, he can represent only the Super Eagles at international level.
Rangers defender Leon Balogun and TSG Hoffenheim star Kevin Akpoguma were eligible to represent Germany's senior national team but pledged their international future to Nigeria.
