Barcelona's Yamal becomes La Liga youngest scorer: Top 5 youngest Nigerian-born players to score in division
Published: October 09, 2023Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal entered the history books as the youngest ever player to score in the Spanish top flight after finding the net in the first half of Barcelona's 2-2 draw with Granada on Sunday.
At 16 years and 87 days, he became the youngest player to score in a La Liga match, overtaking Cameroon international Fabrice Olinga who was aged 16 years and 98 days when he netted the game-winning goal in the 84th minute of Malaga's 1-0 victory against Celta de Vigo on the opening day of the 2012-2013 season.
The top five youngest Nigerian-born players to score in the Spanish La Liga include two former Fifa U17 World Cup winners, two players who have captained the Golden Eaglets in the past and a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner.
2013 Fifa U17 World Cup-winning striker Isaac Success holds the record of being the youngest Nigeria-born player to score in La Liga, aged 18 years and 334 days when he scored the equalizer for Granada in a 1-1 draw versus Valencia on December 7, 2014.
In second place is 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup winner Samuel Chukwueze who was aged 19 years and 173 days when he opened the scoring for Villarreal in a 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano on November 11, 2018.
Former Golden Eaglets captain Ramon Azeez was 21 years and 9 days when he netted the winner for Granada against Real Betis on matchday 17 of the 2013-2014 season.
Completing the top five are ex-Golden Eaglets captain Nduka Ugbade (21 years and 262 days) and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winning midfielder Nosa Igiebor (22 years and 154 days).
