Ex-Brazil and Napoli striker Edmundo reacts to whether Osimhen should be nicknamed 'The Animal'

Retired Brazil international and former Napoli striker Edmundo Alves de Souza Neto believes he has a different playing style than Victor Osimhen.

Edmundo had a brilliant career but was a controversial player, ranging from helping Brazil win the Copa América in 1997 to fighting opponents and teammates, and as a result was nicknamed 'The Animal'. 

Oismhen has been involved in some controversial incidents of late including threatening to sue his club Napoli in the wake of the TikTok saga and refusing to celebrate his goal with teammates in recent matches. 

The Nigeria international has put his differences aside with Napoli, scoring in each of his last two appearances in the Italian Serie A before the visit of Fiorentina to the Diego Maradona Stadium on Sunday. 

Edmundo was capable of playing in all the positions in attack, while Osimhen is predominantly a centre forward. 

When asked if his nickname 'The Animal' would suit Osimhen, Edmundo said to Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport via Ilnapolionline: "Well, I don't know him that well.

"We have different characteristics, I played further back and he is a centre-forward who knows how to go deep behind the defenders.

"I consider him an absolute champion, but I don't know if he can be considered the best in his role at an international level.

"He is very willing even if the ball doesn't always reach him often".

Edmundo registered 16 goals and 12 assists in 54 matches combined for Fiorentina and Napoli in the Serie A.
