Boniface or Granit Xhaka? Mainz coach names the player who is 'currently the best player in Bundesliga'
Published: September 28, 2023
Mainz 05's Danish football tactician Bo Svensson has spoken to the German media ahead of his side's Bundesliga clash with Bayer Leverkusen at the MEWA ARENA on Saturday, a game corresponding to the sixth round of matches in the division.
Svensson has warned his players not to focus only on red-hot striker Victor Boniface as there are other players in the Bayer Leverkusen side who are dangerous.
The one-cap Nigeria international has earned rave reviews for his brilliant performances since landing in Germany this summer, having mustered an impressive eight goals in seven games across all competitions while producing three assists.
If Boniface nets a brace against Mainz on game week six, he would set a new club record for the most goals scored by a Bayer Leverkusen player after the first six matchdays.
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso bolstered his squad in the summer transfer window with the signing of Granit Xhaka, who has emerged as an influential player in the new season, helping the BayArena outfit remain undefeated after seven games, all of which he played in.
Bo Svensson reckons that the former Arsenal captain is currently the best player in the German Bundesliga.
"Boniface is a great player, but things continue with Wirtz and Hofmann, who complement him very well," Svensson said to Sport1.
"Granit Xhaka is currently the best player in the Bundesliga."
Boniface won both the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month and Player of the Month awards for August 2023.
