Gent chief refuses to rule out Tottenham Hotspur target Gift Orban staying at The Buffalos
Published: August 28, 2023
Gent chairman Ivan De Witte has revealed that it is possible that The Buffalos will still count on the services of Gift Orban and Hugo Cuypers after the close of the summer transfer window amid speculation linking both with a departure from the Ghelamco Arena.
Tottanham Hotspur have yet to sign a replacement for club legend Harry Kane who departed for Bayern Munich in exchange for 100 million euros.
Orban has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur as well as Lille but the Lilywhites' interest in the prolific striker seems to have gone cold in recent days.
Manager Ange Postecoglou has given the green light for Tottenham Hotspur to make a move for Nottingham Forest's homegrown striker Brennan Johnson, a decision that would see Orban become a Plan B for the north London club should they fail to land the Welshman.
Orban has also been identified as a potential replacement for Jonathan David if Lille decide to part ways with the Canadian star this week.
Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Ivan De Witte said: "I do not rule out that they will both stay.
"It would have been a different story without that capital increase, but now we no longer have to sell. Which does not alter the fact that a financial buffer is always a good thing.
"Football remains business, hey – you can't be naive. Suppose there is a more than attractive proposal for Orban, knowing what that means for stability and possibilities in the future, then you have to think about it.
"But it's not like it's mandatory. That pressure has been relieved a lot thanks to Sam Baro."
Since landing at Gent on a four-and-a-half-year deal in January, Orban has tallied 26 goals in 29 matches across all competitions.
