'I've been working hard' - Bassey insists he's committed to Ajax amid Brighton links
Published: July 14, 2023Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has revealed that he is motivated for the forthcoming season.
Despite being linked with a move to Premier League club Brighton & Hove, Bassey expressed his commitment to Ajax and his focus on helping the team in the upcoming season.
In an interview with Ajax TV, Bassey emphasized his determination to return to the club in peak condition and make a positive impact under the guidance of the new coach.
He highlighted the hard work he has put in during the offseason and expressed confidence that it will pay off.
"Of course I trained all summer long. You want to come back in the best shape. We have a new coach so a good start is important. Hopefully I can score some bonus point," Bassey said.
"I've been working hard so it should work out. I'm happy to be back and looking forward to the new season."
Having scored one goal in 25 league appearances for Ajax last season, Bassey aims to build on his performances and contribute significantly to the team's success in the upcoming campaign.
On the international front, Bassey had multiple options regarding his national team allegiance due to his Italian birth.
However, in 2021, he committed his international future to Nigeria and accepted a call-up to represent the Super Eagles in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Bassey made his debut for Nigeria in a 0-0 draw against Ghana in a World Cup qualification match on March 25, 2022.
The 23-year-old defender's decision to prioritize his commitment to Ajax demonstrates his dedication to the club and his desire to continue developing as a player in their setup.
With his international future secured with Nigeria, Bassey will now focus on further improving his skills and contributing to the success of both Ajax and the Super Eagles in the upcoming season.
