Marc-Vivien Foe award: Podium finish for Moffi as ex-Newcastle man named best African in Ligue 1
Published: May 30, 2023Former Newcastle defender, Chancel Mbemba has beaten Nigerian striker Terem Moffi and Ivorian midfielder Seko Fofana to the African Player of the Year award in Ligue 1 which is otherwise known as the Marc-Vivien Foé prize.
Mbemba has been fantastic for Olympique de Marseille at the centre of defence this season and has helped them qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.
In what was a keenly contested vote, the Congolese defender amassed 207 points, Fofana scored 196 points while Moffi finished third with 125 points.
Moffi was nominated for his goalscoring exploits for Lorient and Nice this season.
He netted 12 goals in 18 games for Lorient before moving to Nice on a loan deal in the January transfer window and has gone on to score 5 goals in 15 games for them.
Fofana who won it last year has also been brilliant in the middle of the park for RC Lens this season, scoring 7 goals and registering five assists.
The winner is determined by votes of nearly 100 former players and journalists who specialize in French and African football.
The award is named after a former Cameroonian International, Marc-Vivien Foé who died during the Indomitable Lions Confederations Cup semifinal with Colombia in 2003.
The award was first given out in the 2008/2009 season and was won by Marouane Chamakh of Morocco and only two Nigerians have won it since then - Vincent Enyeama and Victor Osimhen.
