'A lot of players do that' - Union SG coach on Boniface's furious reaction to being substituted
Published: May 04, 2023
Royale Union Saint Gilloise manager Karel Geraerts has played down Victor Boniface's furious reaction to being substituted during the Jupiler Pro League playoff tie with Royal Antwerp on Wednesday night.
Union SG missed a golden chance to close the gap on leaders Racing Genk after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Royal Antwerp, with Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Mandela Keita getting on the scoresheet in the first half.
Boniface was a shadow of himself and the manager decided it was best to take him off on the hour mark.
This did not go down well with the Nigerian forward as he did not give the manager a look and immediately stormed into the dressing room with an angry look on his face.
"I've seen a lot of players do that. It is not nice for Boniface that he is being replaced," Geraerts told Eleven Sports, via voetbalbelgie.
"I put myself in his place and understand that he is not satisfied. I have no problem with that. Just let it cool down and catch your breath."
Boniface has directly participated in 25 goals (15 goals, 10 assists) as a Royale Union Saint Gilloise player since his transfer from Bodo/Glimt last summer.
Of his 46 appearances for Union SG, he has gone the distance in only nine matches comprising seven in the Pro League and one each in the Europa League and Belgian Cup.
