Official : Livingston extend contract of 2016 Olympic Eagles invitee
Published: April 24, 2023With a statement on their official website, Scottish Premiership outfit Livingston have announced that the club have triggered the one-year extension on Ayo Obileye’s contract.
The new deal will keep the versatile central defender at Livingston until at least the end of the 2023-2024 season.
Obileye, who trained with Nigeria's U23 national team in April 2016 before the Rio Olympic games, joined Livingston on a two-year deal in the summer of 2021, with a further one-year option in the club's favour.
Since his arrival at The Lions, he has played in 72 matches across all competitions, scoring seven goals while providing two assists.
Obileye has not featured for Livingston since March 4 due to an injury he suffered in a league game against Hibernian.
Speaking to the official website of Livingston on Obileye's contract extension, manager David Martindale said : "I’m delighted that we’ve been able to exercise the additional year on Ayo’s contract to see him remain at the club for next season.
“Losing him when we did has been a big blow as the presence Ayo brings to the team at the heart of our defence is huge.
"The fact he’s amassed over 70 appearances in just over a season and a half shows how important he’s been to the team and I’m looking forward to having him back for pre-season as we turn attention to next season.
"This extension gives Ayo the peace of mind given his injury that he still has a big role to play here next season and his experience will be vital as we look to improve on this season."
Obileye spent his formative years as a footballer with the youth teams of Leyton Orient and Chelsea, before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2011.
His other teams include Charlton Athletic, Dagenham & Redbridge, Eastleigh, Dover Athletic, Maidenhead United, Ebbsfleet United.
