Ruud van Nistelrooy confirms PSV were compelled to sell Madueke to Chelsea
Published: March 10, 2023
Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who now coaches PSV Eindhoven, has confirmed that the Dutch Eredivisie giants were compelled to sell Noni Madueke and Cody Gakpo to Chelsea and Liverpool respectively in the January transfer window.
Madueke made a return to London, joining the Blues on a seven-and-a-half-year contract with a club option for the 2030-2031 season, while Gakpo, one of the outstanding players of the 2022 World Cup, switched to Liverpool on a five-and-a-half-year contract.
The two Premier League giants dished out approximately 80 million euros to PSV Eindhoven to land the services of the two players of African descent.
Van Nistelrooy has admitted that PSV were left with no choice but to sell Madueke and Gakpo because the Eindhoven club needed to balance their books, and has assumed that it will no longer be necessary to sell their key players in the coming years.
The retired Netherlands international addressed the media on Friday ahead of his side's league meeting with SC Cambuur and one of the subjects he touched on was the transfers of Madueke and Gakpo.
In quotes relayed by Dutch broadcaster RTL Nieuws, Van Nistelrooy stated : "Now we can continue to build, that was the goal of those transfers. Together we now want to set up a stronger selection."
Madueke, a product of the Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur academies, has appeared in four Premier League matches since moving to Chelsea but was not eligible to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday.
