Two reasons behind Iwobi's importance to Sean Dyche at Everton
Published: March 10, 2023
Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi has been one of the standout players in a struggling Everton side this season.
He started all the 20 games played under former manager, Frank Lampard and has started all 6 games since the appointment of Sean Dyche.
Below are the reasons behind Iwobi’s importance to Everton.
1) Productivity in attack : No Everton player has more goal contributions (goals plus assists) than Iwobi this season with 1 goal and 6 assists, making him a vital player in attack.
He is also always involved in the build up irrespective of where he is being played. He ranks 5th and 6th respectively for the most shot and goal creating actions (the last two offensive actions before a goal is scored or a shot is taken, be it a pass, dribble or foul won).
2. Defensive work rate: This is what makes him undroppable by Dyche at the moment.
Dyche is a pragmatic coach who lays emphasis on defensive solidity and that is why his team play in a low block.
The former Burnley manager must have looked at the data of players when he came in and noticed how important Iwobi can be for him.
Iwobi ranks third for most tackles won among players to have made at least 20 tackles, ranks 5th for most blocks and is the 4th player with the most defensive actions(tackles plus interception), according to stats from FBREF.
The 26-year-old is being played as a right winger or left winger in a 4-5-1 formation by Dyche and he is vital to stopping opposition full-backs and wingers from causing havoc.
When you take a look at what Iwobi offers offensively and defensively, then one would recognize his importance to Dyche's side as Everton continue their struggle to avoid relegation.
