U20 AFCON : Who are the key Gambia players that Flying Eagles must be wary of in semifinal clash?
Published: March 05, 2023
The Flying Eagles will face the Young Scorpions of Gambia in one of the two semifinals at the ongoing Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt on Monday.
Nigeria defeated the Hippos of Uganda 1-0 while Gambia thrashed South Sudan 5-0 to reach this stage.
Below are the two players Ladan Bosso's boys must look out for as they continue their push for a record eighth African title and the first since 2015.
1. Adama Bojang: The 18-year-old was a hero when Gambia humiliated South Sudan in the quarter-finals. The attacker scored a hat trick to help the Young Scorpions ease past their South Sudan.
The Flying Eagles, who have conceded just one goal so far must keep Bojang quiet on Monday to stand a chance of getting past Gambia.
2. Alagie Saine: Saine is the captain of the young Gambians and has been colossal in defence, helping his team keep a clean sheet in all 4 matches they have played so far.
He has also found the back of the net twice in the tournament, one of them being a crucial goal he scored in Gambia's opening 1-0 win over Tunisia.
He is a technically gifted defender, who is skilled, athletic, calm on the ball and has good football intelligence.
Nigeria, who have struggled in attack, must find a way to get past Saine on Monday to stand a chance of scoring and qualifying for the showpiece on March 11, 2023.
