Three Nigerian players that impressed on Saturday and observations from their games
Published: January 29, 2023
Several League and Cup games were played on Saturday with some strong Nigerian presence in some of those fixtures.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents the three Nigerian players that distinguished themselves with impressive performances and observations from their games.
1. Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, England)
Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal as Leicester City defeated Walsall to advance to the fifth round of the competition on Saturday.
There was a slight deflection of the ball off a Walsall defender that caught the goalkeeper completely off guard.
.
The strike has thus meant that the Nigerian has scored two goals in the FA Cup this season for Leicester.
He scored in the Foxes' 1-0 win over Gillingham on 7January 2022 before Saturday's goal, his second of the competition this season.
Iheanacho has reached 50 goals for Leicester City in 191 games and has twenty nine assists to his credit.
Iheanacho's encouraging form in the FA Cup may seem a great deal but it could inadvertently make him appear as the second or third choice to his striking teammates, Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka.
2. Ademola Lookman (Atalanta, Italy)
Lookman scored his 12th goal of the season for Atalanta in their 2-0 win over Sampdoria on Saturday night.
Aside from the Serie A, the Nigerian scored twice in the Coppa Italia competition - in a 5-2 win over Spezia on January 19.
Lookman is proving to be a serious contender for the topscorer in the Serie A this season and could snatch the prize from fellow Nigerian, Victor Osimhen.
Lookman is loving life at the Bergamo and is only a goal behind fellow Nigerian and Napoli hitman, Victor Osimhen, in the top scorers chart.
3. Bobby Adekanye (Go Ahead Eagles, Netherlands)
Despite his team's 2-0 defeat to PSV on Saturday evening, Adekanye showed glimpses of his immense talents when he came off the substitute bench in the 73rd minute for Go Ahead Eagles.
The winger made a total of 11 touches in the less than 20 minutes cameo appearance he made on Saturday and had one key moment that he created a goal scoring chance.
He has scored five Eredivisie goals this season in 17 league matches although he has to work on his discipline as he has scored just started.
Adekanye's performance is a pointer to the need to have the winger in the Nigerian national team.
The former Dutch youth international born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria has superb deft touches, linkup plays, speed and enthusiasm that were in full glare of those who saw the game.
