African World Cup star casts a shadow over his Chelsea future after rejecting six-year deal
Published: December 22, 2022African World Cup star Edouard Mendy has cast a doubt over his long-term future at Premier League side Chelsea after reportedly rejecting a new contract.
According to the online edition of The Sun UK, the Senegal international snubbed a six-year contract offer because Chelsea are not showing him enough respect over his wages.
The 30-year-old is back at Cobham ahead of the Premier League restart after starring for the Teranga Lions at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he went the distance in every single game played by the African champions, helping them reach the round of 16 before they were beaten by England.
Mendy currently pockets 100,000 pounds per week at Chelsea and is asking for the same wages Kepa Arrizabalaga is receiving.
The Spaniard negotiated his £190,000-a-week contract when he joined Chelsea in 2018 for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper.
Since the arrival of manager Graham Potter, Kepa has become the Blues number one goalkeeper, with Mendy making five appearances under the English football tactician whereas his rival has featured in ten matches.
Italian champions AC Milan, Monaco and Nice are monitoring the situation of Mendy, who has two and a half years left on his contract with Chelsea.
