AFCON 2021 : Five observations from Nigeria's 1-0 win over Egypt
Published: January 12, 2022
The Super Eagles started on a good note, beating seven-time champions Egypt on Tuesday evening, as Augustine Eguavoen and his team target a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title.
What are the key takeaways from the game? Allnigeriasoccer.com provides the answers.
1. Playing Safe By Egypt
The game plan of the Egyptians was obvious from the beginning.
They sat back to soak up the pressure and catch the Eagles on the counter but the Nigerians pressed well to deny them the spaces.
2. Moses' Crosses Needs Improvement
Moses Simon tormented the Egyptians with his movements but his final balls left much to be desired. The Nigerian team might have scored more than one goal had he been more productive.
3. Eagles Left Spaces For Egypt To Exploit In The Second Half
The North Africans had more of the ball in the second half and threatened to restore parity as the Super Eagles defence gave them yards to exploit.
Thankfully that did not lead to an equaliser for Mohamed Salah and co.
4. Omeruo, Troost-Ekong's Best Games For Nigeria
The central defensive pair of Kenneth Omeruo and William Troost-Ekong denied the Egyptians any time on the ball in the first half albeit that was not perfectly executed in the second stanza.
Their defending and long balls from the defensive area were magnificent. That was a common theme when coach Austin Eguavoen played for the national team many years back. Impactful.
5. Fans Not Vociferous
There were Nigeria fans in the stands but their singing voices and instruments were not loud despite the presence of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club.
Perhaps, a bit more louder fan base might have inspired the players to perform better.
