Union Berlin coach names two Nigerian strikers in line to replace Awoniyi during AFCON
Published: January 06, 2022
Union Berlin manager Urs Fischer has named two Nigerian strikers in contention to replace Taiwo Awoniyi during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Out-of-favour Super Eagles striker Anthony Ujah and former Flying Eagles star Suleiman Abdullahi could be given an opportunity to shine in the absence of attack-minded duo Awoniyi and Sheraldo Becker.
Awoniyi is currently with the Nigeria squad in Garoua, Cameroon and Becker is not available for selection after he tested positive for coronavirus.
The former Liverpool star has been Union Berlin's star player this season, scoring fourteen goals in all competitions including nine in the German Bundesliga.
The capital outfit have a busy period coming up with four games in the space of fourteen days.
On his missing strikers Becker and Awoniyi, Fischer told German tabloid BZ: "We still have a good mix in the squad. A solution has to be found. We also have Anthony Ujah and Suleiman Abdullahi in the roster."
Ujah has yet to make his season debut for Union Berlin and the same applies to Abdullahi.
