Former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is among three roster invitees in the Super Eagles camp in Abuja as the three-time African champions gear up to begin their preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
A shock inclusion in the 28-man squad list announced on Christmas Day, Orlando Pirates central defender Olisa Ndah was the first player to arrive at the Super Eagles camp on Wednesday, the day the training camp opened.
And the 23-year-old was later joined by Enyimba goalkeeper John Noble and Awoniyi.
Interim Nigeria boss Augustine Eguavoen has selected four goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders and ten strikers in his final squad, with sixteen of those players part of the squad that won bronze in the last AFCON tournament held in Egypt.
Awoniyi was released on time by Union Berlin because the German Bundesliga has been paused for the winter break until January 7, 2022, two days before the opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 2013 U17 World Cup winner made his senior debut against Central African Republic in Lagos in October, coming off the bench to replace Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho.
Of the 28 players named in the Super Eagles' AFCON squad, Awoniyi has scored the most goals in the current season - fourteen in all competitions.
